Strengthening UCL’s connections in South Korea

7 November 2024

Prof Geraint Rees, UCL’s Vice-Provost (Research, Innovation & Global Engagement), led a delegation to South Korea to strengthen partnerships with academic, industry, and government leaders, deepen collaborations, and engage UCL’s alumni community in addressing global challenges.

UCL delegation visiting Yonsei University

During the visit, the delegation celebrated UCL’s strong connections in South Korea, where UCL has more research collaborations than any other UK university. Reflecting on these links, Prof Rees remarked, “South Korea’s commitment to R&D is exceptional, and we are honoured to partner with such dynamic institutions. Our efforts will drive impactful research and innovation to address pressing global issues.”

Expanding partnerships in space research

UCL’s delegation met with the Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) in line with World Space Week. This collaboration underscores the close ties between UCL and South Korea in astronomy and astrophysics. Between 2019 and 2023, South Korean and UCL researchers co-authored over 100 papers in these fields. The British Embassy in Seoul hosted the meeting. UCL representatives connected with British Ambassador HE Colin Crooks and the new Science Attaché, further strengthening diplomatic and academic bonds.

Deepening university collaborations

Since signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in November 2023, UCL and Korea University have launched a joint seed fund to support projects addressing global challenges. With awards of up to £10,000 per project, this fund marks a commitment to impactful research and education initiatives. Both universities look forward to seeing the outcomes of these collaborations and encouraging future research applications.

At Yonsei University, the UCL delegation met with Vice President for Research Affairs, Professor Lee, to discuss potential new collaborations in fields including neuroscience, chemical engineering, quantum science, and creative industries—areas with significant innovation potential.

Celebrating alumni connections

The visit concluded with a reception for UCL’s South Korean alumni community in Seoul. South Korea is home to over 1,800 alumniand a vital part of UCL’s global community. The event, hosted by the Office of the Vice-President (Advancement), allowed alumni to reconnect with fellow graduates, form new friendships, and discuss UCL’s upcoming bicentennial in 2026. The gathering also marked the launch of the new UCL Korea Alumni LinkedIn group, further supporting the vibrant alumni network in South Korea.
