Ghosts in the pavement: footfall, pattern and soft diplomacy
Ageing populations and fungal infections: a collaborative study. Part of the Cities partnership Programme.
15 September 2022
This project represents a collaboration between three institutions, The Slade School of Fine Art, UCL (Professor Liz Rideal) The British School at Rome and John Cabot American University in Rome.
The campus' proximity to the medieval Basilicas of S Maria and S Crisogono in Trastevere, with their impressive Cosmati floors, provides the material research context for intricate mosaic floor frottages. Artwork initiated there will be painted in my London studio. The final pieces will be exhibited at John Cabot. These ‘reinventions’ will offer visualizations of the palimpsest of ghostly footfall from the church floors.
The work acts as a creative metaphor that allows me to articulate the complex and self-reflective ways of working in the public arena while simultaneously engaging with the public, the geographic and the cultural sites. The rubbings reflect my haunting of the space.
