Grant

Grant: Special Initiative - Research Innovation Award
Year awarded: 2023-24
Amount awarded: £20,000

Academics

  • Dr. Sahan Bulathwela, Engineering Sciences, Computer Science
  • Prof. Mutlu Cukurova, UCL Knowledge Lab, UCL IOE

The proposed project exploits the research team's current  AI models and text extraction capabilities to create a reliable data annotation system that universities can rely on for  Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) monitoring. In the past, both Dr Bulathwela and Prof. Cukurova have worked with UCL stakeholders to build tools that improve visibility. This project positions researchers in machine learning, engineering education and HCI to come together and continue to impact on activities of the UCL Environmental Sustainability Steering Group and SDGs Initiative developing needed tools. The project scopes to develop a researched and demand informed system helping students and faculty navigate their personal SDG agenda.

This research project aimed to build a prototype system that can annotate UCL module descriptions, Moodle contents and Google Scholar profiles of academics to compile summarised information to present their connection to SDGs and allow others to make decisions on building sustainable partnerships to progress SDGs.
