We currently have a network of over 155 Wellbeing Champions across UCL. We believe that Wellbeing Champions can transform UCL for the better.
In 2022 we created the Wellbeing Supporter role for those with an interest in wellbeing and sharing information but who may not feel they have the time to commit to the role of the Wellbeing Champion.
Wellbeing Champions
What is a Wellbeing Champion?
Wellbeing Champions play a crucial role in promoting positive mental health and wellbeing. They are voluntary members of staff who promote and support the implementation of Being Well at UCL. They do this in addition to their day-to-day roles at UCL, although there no set number of hours for this.
Wellbeing Champions know their work areas and colleagues best so know what is needed and is likely be most effective.
- They foster a positive and supportive environment across UCL
- They promote wellbeing initiatives, activities and resources.
- They receive inhouse training and Mental Health first Aid training.
- They are the first point of contact in local areas for those needing advice on wellbeing support.
- They are supported by, and report into, the Workplace Health team.
- They feedback on areas of concern to the Workplace Health team. Feedback is incorporated into the delivery of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy at UCL.
Person specification
A suitable candidate will have the following attributes:
- An enthusiasm for, and interest in wellbeing
- A belief in the value and importance of wellbeing in the workplace
- Passion to make a difference to improve the working environment
- Confidence to circulate and promote wellbeing information to their wider staff networks
- Enthusiasm and motivation to encourage staff engagement through wellbeing initiative
- Desire and willingness to help others
- Creativity in organising initiatives and activities with limited financial resources
- A basic understanding of healthy lifestyles and health promotion
Requirements
- Keep up to date with UCL wellbeing activities
- Provide information about Wellbeing at UCL to colleagues and act as a point of contact
- Be available for colleagues to contact you with wellbeing concerns
- Circulate the Being Well newsletter amongst colleagues
- Play an active role in promoting UCL wellbeing initiatives, activities and resources within your department, Faculty, and wider colleague network
- Organise wellbeing activities for colleagues
- Report monthly activity to the Wellbeing Coordinator
- Attend quarterly wellbeing champion meetings and share best practice
- Attend ad hoc training events/meetings and collaborate with other champions
- Inform Workplace Wellbeing of any change that prevents you from continuing as a Wellbeing Champion
- You must be a direct employee of UCL and have approval from your line manager

Wellbeing Supporters
What is a Wellbeing Supporter?
A Wellbeing Supporter has an active interest in wellbeing. They work with Wellbeing Champions in their area to coordinate activity and ensure there is no duplication of effort and streamline how Wellbeing related content is shared.
They help spread wellbeing activity from the Workplace Wellbeing team and related information, including the Being Well at UCL newsletter, wellbeing trainings and campaigns.
They promote this to their direct teams and any wider colleague channels at a department and/or faculty level.

A suitable candidate will have the following attributes:
- An enthusiasm for, and interest in wellbeing.
- A belief in the value and importance of wellbeing in the workplace.
- Passion to make a difference to improve the working environment.
- Confidence to circulate and promote wellbeing information to their wider staff networks.
- Enthusiasm and motivation to encourage staff engagement through wellbeing initiative.
Requirements
- To share the Being Well at UCL newsletter, Workplace Wellbeing activity and any sources of wellbeing support for UCL staff.
- To support Wellbeing Champions on delivering events and activities
- To keep Workplace Wellbeing updated if they decide to no longer be a Wellbeing Supporter.

How does this vary to the Wellbeing Champion role?
- A Wellbeing Supporter role is more suitable for those who are time poor but would like to support in promoting wellbeing in their area
- Wellbeing Supporter’s main role is to share information in areas that Wellbeing Champions may not have access to. They can also support the Wellbeing Champions in their area or in a different department
- Wellbeing Supporters have no commitments to reporting monthly activity
- Wellbeing Supporters do not have to be contactable for supportive conversations with colleagues (unless already MHFA trained and willing to)
