In the Lisbon metropolitan area, there were 355,363 deaths from all causes over the study period (1995 - 2008). This figure consists of 183,955 male deaths and 171,408 female deaths and is based on data from the Instituto Nacional de Estatística (Statistics Portugal).
The highest sSMRs for both men and women are observed in areas that reside where the Tagus River ends in the far North-East. From here, excess mortality risk continues southward to the South Bank and below. High female sSMRs are also clustered in the Northern outskirts of Torres Vedra and Bombarra (shown in dark brown). The highest deficit in mortality risk for both genders is evident in the areas surrounding the city centre on the North Bank of the river, as well as is some areas on the South Bank. Low sSMRs are also interspersed within a few Northern areas of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.
