Zurich: All-Cause Mortality

In Zurich, there were 53,251 deaths from all causes over the study period (2000 - 2008).  This figure consists of 23,832 male deaths and 29,419 female deaths and is based on data from the Statistik Stadt Zürich (Zurich Statistics Office).

High sSMRs for all-cause mortality among men and women are found in areas north of the centre of Zurich, as shown by the cluster of brown areas located above Lake Zurich (the striped area in the South-East).  High excess mortality near the centre of Zurich coincides with the high levels of deprivation observed in these areas, as shown in the socio-economic indicators maps in the Atlas.  Aside from these areas, gender differences are found in the spatial distribution of mortality risk throughout the city.  In South-Eastern Zurich, there is a substantial deficit in mortality risk among men, as shown by the green areas surrounding Lake Zurich and moving to the East.  Among women, higher sSMRs are estimated in these areas, represented by the number of brown coloured areas.  As the South-East is largely an affluent area of Zurich, these maps suggest that socio-economic affluence is associated with a reduced risk of all-cause mortality among men, but not among women in these areas.
