Socio-Economic Indicators

The INEQ-CITIES Atlas displays maps that demonstrate socio-economic inequalities within European cities.  Maps were constructed to demonstrate relative deprivation or affluence using area-level indicators of unemployment, manual workers, low educational attainment and university qualifications.  The techniques used to display these maps are described below.

Geographical Representation

The Atlas provides up to four maps of socio-economic indicators for each city.  Indicators are displayed using septiles with a divergent colour scheme to show the gradation of social inequalities between small areas of each city.  Areas with the lowest levels per socio-economic indicator are represented by green shades, while those with the highest levels are represented by brown shades.  Sparsely populated or uninhabitable areas are shown in stripes.

The socio-economic indicators shown in the Atlas are defined below:

Unemployment

This is the area-level proportion of unemployed adults aged 16 and older who are looking for their first job or have worked previously, based on the total population aged 16 and older who are currently working, looking for their first job or have worked previously.

Manual Workers

This is the area-level proportion of manual workers aged 16 and older, based on the total number of the working population aged 16 and older.  (This indicator is not available for Helsinki, Prague and Stockholm).

Low Educational Attainment

This is the area-level proportion of the population aged 25 - 64 who completed their formal schooling at the primary education, first stage of basic education or lower levels, based on the total population aged 25 - 64.  The indicator of low educational attainment is based on Levels 0 - 1 of the International Standard Classification of Education, 1997.  (This indicators is not available for Lisbon).

University Qualifications

This is the area-level proportion of the population aged 25 - 64 who obtained university qualifications at the first or second stage of tertiary education, based on the total population aged 25 - 64.  The indicator of university qualifications is based on Levels 5 - 6 of the International Standard Classification of Education, 1997.

For several cities in the INEQ-CITIES Atlas, the above definitions were modified in order to accommodate the available data from each city.  To learn how the socio-economic indicators were derived for each city, please see the following document for additional data and methods:
