This event offers an opportunity for PhD and EdD students in the field of higher education studies to present their research. 

It is open to all and will be of particular interest to doctoral students, research associates and faculty members within the Department of Education, Practice and Society.

Presentations

Strategic Relations in Business Schools: a comparative case study by Dr Andres Perez

12:00 to 12:40pm

Andres will discuss his thesis for the Doctorate in Education (EdD). He will explore the current challenges, strategies, innovative practices and future options for the development of Strategic External Relationships of leading business schools in higher education, particularly those embedded in business ecosystems. 

The method for his research will be case study analysis.

Access to elite doctoral schools in China by Wen Xiaoyu

12:40 to 1:20pm

The literature highlights the significant role of social class and gender in students’ access to elite doctoral schools of economics in China.

In this presentation, Wen will explore her study where she selected a context specific capability list and examined the development of identified capabilities by linking Bourdieu social reproduction theory with Sen’s Capability Approach.

Practices and identities of Chinese educational recruitment agents by Cassie Zhang

1:20 to 2:00pm

Cassie will share three research findings on the organisational characteristics – a mapping exercise - of Chinese education recruitment agencies, along with some interesting voices raised among her 44 interviews with agent staffs during the pandemic.

About the Speakers

Andres Perez

Andres has worked in business schools since 2000. He holds an LLB, a BSc in Economics and Business, an MBA and a PhD in Business. He has written a book and several articles and cases.

He is the Director of the University of Law Business School and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).

Wen Xiaoyu

Wen is a PhD student supervised by Dr Tatiana Fumasoli and Dr Gwyneth Hughes. During her PhD, she encountered Amartya Sen’s Capability Approach (CA) and was deeply attracted.

She tries to combine the CA with Bourdieu’s social reproduction theory to understand questions related to higher education access and equality.

Cassie Zhang

Cassie is a PhD candidate under the supervision of Associate Professor Tatiana Fumasoli and Dr Sazana Jayadeva.

Cassie's current research examines the emergence, evolution and institutionalisation of Chinese education recruitment agencies.

Due to her multidisciplinary education background and work experience, Cassie is particularly interested in mixed methods and interdisciplinary social science research.
