Speaking on the news of the IOE being named world number one for education, Interim Director Professor Sue Rogers said:

“The past 12 months have been some of the most challenging any of us will remember in our lifetime. This is particularly the case for our community who have been incredibly innovative in adapting their ways of working and exceptionally dedicated in ensuring high-quality teaching and research continue amid the challenges of remote working.

“I’m immensely proud of this achievement, which extends not only to IOE colleagues but to our fantastic students, partners and alumni, many of whom are working hard to ensure people can still access education across the world during the COVID-19 pandemic. You have all played an important part in the IOE being ranked world number 1 for the eighth year in the row and will be integral in rebuilding lives and communities across the world as countries emerge from lockdown and for generations to come.”

In addition to the IOE’s number 1 position, eight other subject areas from UCL have been ranked in the top 10 globally: architecture and the built environment (2nd), archaeology (3rd), anthropology (6th), anatomy and physiology (7th), pharmacy and pharmacology (7th), geography (9th), medicine (9th), and psychology (10th).

The QS World University Rankings by subject highlight the world’s top universities in a range of subject areas. Published annually since 2011, the rankings are based on academic reputation, employer reputation and research citations.

Out of 43 subjects where UCL is ranked, 24 subjects are in the world top 25 – and all but four subjects are ranked in the top 10 in the UK.

The QS World University rankings – which rank universities overall, rather than at subject level – will be published later this year. The most recent edition of these rankings placed UCL at 10th in the world.
