Fellowship is given to alumni of the Royal Academy of Music for their achievements in music and music education.

The Royal Academy of Music is the oldest music school in the UK and was founded in 1822. It trains students across the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in subjects such as jazz, instrumental performance and opera. Every year, it announces a list of musicians and educators who have distinguished themselves in the profession.

Professor Hallam is an Emerita Professor of Education and Music Psychology at IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society. She was awarded an MBE in the 2015 New Year Honours List and lifelong membership to the British Psychological Society and the International Society for Music Education.

She has published widely on topics such as school attendance, music education and music psychology. Her research explores learning in music, music’s effect on behaviour and learning, and pedagogy in secondary and higher education.

She studied violin at the Royal Academy of Music from 1967 to 1971 and went on to become a Principal Second Violin in the BBC Midland Light Orchestra. She became interested in Psychology and began studying it at the London University, before undertaking her Master’s and PhD degrees in the Psychology of Education at IOE.

She says, ‘It was a great surprise to be awarded a fellowship at the Royal Academy of Music. I am greatly honoured.’

This year’s honours were conferred at the Academy’s 2023 graduation ceremony on 11 July 2023.
