IOE academic awarded prestigious Yushan Fellowship by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education
6 September 2023
Professor Andy Green received funding for a Senior Fellowship for his collaborative work with the National Chung Cheng University (CCU) to teach and research in Taiwan for the next three years.
The Yushan Scholar programme aims to support various universities in recruiting top international scholars to teach in Taiwan. Fellows are typically members of leading international research institutions and widely recognised for their academic expertise and contributions to their field.
The project focuses on ‘Re-thinking Comparative Approaches to Lifelong Learning (in an Era of Retreating Globalisation)’. It builds on Professor Green’s previous work in Asia from 1995, including two periods as a visiting professor at CCU, his visit as a Global Scholar of Peking University in 2018, and the two Max Weber Stiftung lectures he delivered in India in February 2019.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Education funds the Senior Fellowship for three months each year for the next three years, beginning in 2024.
Professor Andy Green is a Professor of Comparative Social Science and the Director of the Centre on Learning and Life Chances (LLAKES). His research focuses on the comparative (historical and sociological) study of education and training systems, their origins and their social and economic consequences. He also explores the role of education in state formation and the evolution of complex state-society relationships.
He teaches on the Comparative Education MA and has published widely, including four books translated into Chinese and Japanese.
Professor Green says, ‘It’s a great honour to be awarded a Yushan scholarship, not least since this is apparently the first time such an award has been made to someone working in the field of education. I very much look forward to working with my collaborators in CCU on this project.’
