Andy Green is Professor in Comparative Social Science, based in the Centre for Learning and Life Chances in Knowledge Economies and Societies (LLAKES) at IOE.
What is the focus of your research and what benefits do you hope your insights will bring?
The focus of my research is on the comparative (historical and sociological) study of education and training systems, their origins and social and economic consequences. An ongoing theme in this work has been the role of education in state formation. I would hope that my work has helped further our understanding of the evolution of complex state-society relationships!
What do you most enjoy about your role?
I get most satisfaction from directing a successful ESRC research centre - LLAKES - and from teaching on the Comparative Education MA. In both cases we explore the potential of interdisciplinary comparative research for answering big questions about education and society.
What working achievement or initiative are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my role in winning two five-year ESRC research centre grants and successfully directing the LLAKES Centre since 2008.
What attracted you to join IOE?
Its reputation for world-leading research on education!
What other subject outside of your area of specialism interests you?
Comparative political economy.
