Research Fellow

1 February 2024

This position is now closed.

Amanda Carr Lab

About the role

The Research Associate will work as part of a team to investigate the role of key cell types in age-related macular degeneration, using human embryonic stem cells and patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells as model systems to create cells including retinal pigment epithelium, macrophages and microglia.

The position would suit an ambitious PhD graduate with a background and interest in human disease modelling. The successful candidate would ideally have experience with flow cytometry and/or FACS. Stem cell culture and molecular biology skills, and an interest in bioinformatics would be an advantage. The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, and with established collaborators, to investigate the role of retinal pigment epithelium and the immune system in early AMD. The full list of responsibilities can be found in the job description.

The appointed individual will join a collaborative team led by Dr Amanda Carr and Professor Pete Coffey.

Salary: £42,099 - £45,521 inclusive of London Allowance, per annum (UCL Grade 7 spine point 30-33)

Duration: The position is funded until 30 November 2025 in the first instance.

About you

The successful applicant should have a PhD in a relevant subject, experience with FACS analysis or flow cytometry, excellent communication skills and show a strong commitment to high-quality research.

The successful candidate will be interested in developing new models to understand cell interactions in disease and enjoy working as a team as well as the ability to work independently.

Appointment as a Research Fellow at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD. If this is not the case, an initial appointment will be made as a Research Assistant at Grade 6b with payment at Grade 7 backdated upon award of a PhD to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis (with corrections).
