UCLH among country's most research active trusts

9 August 2018

UCLH is in the top 10 NHS trusts for clinical research activity.

With 427 research studies recruiting participants in 2017/18 - up on the previous year - and 11,418 study participants, UCLH is ranked 7th in England according to the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

The annual NIHR Research Activity League Table shows the number of trials recruiting participants - and how many participants there are - there are at each trust.

Not included is a calculation of the complexity of the research. 1 in 6 studies at UCLH in 2017/18 were early phase trials, which do not include many participants, yet are crucial to the process of testing new treatments.

NIHR said 53% of trusts increased their research activity in 2017/18, with 725,333 people participating in research in England in total.

Professor Bryan Williams, UCLH Director of Research, said: 'Research studies drive advances in patient care and we're proud that UCLH is at the forefront of this work, with our cutting edge work in areas like cancer, cardiovascular and neurological diseases.'

UCLH have put together information for patients and the public who are interested in taking part in research studies.
