Concessionary rates are available for UCL students, staff and alumni, UCLH staff, and University of London students, staff and alumni (proof of affiliation must be shown to qualify).

*Due to the substantial discount for UCL students, we are unable to issue refunds for one- or two-term payments if you withdraw from the course (see Refunds, below). Please also note that to qualify for the student rate you must be registered on a degree programme for the entire duration of the language course.
**The minimum period for British Sign Language is two terms, as the beginner level course is 20 weeks rather than 10.
How to pay
Payment is taken through the secure Online Store, which takes all the major credit and debit cards. A payment link will be sent to you when you apply. We cannot accept cash, cheques, invoices or purchase orders.
The multi-term discount and concessionary rates cannot be applied retroactively, so please ensure you pay using the correct rate.
We cannot 'reserve' places without payment. You will not be permitted to attend classes if full payment has not been made.
UCL DocSkills Language Support Fund
UCL postgraduate researchers who need to learn another language for their research may qualify for the DocSkills Language Support Fund. Please check the DocSkills pages for conditions and how to apply.
Terms & Conditions: Fees
The Terms and Conditions for the Online Store apply to Evening Courses, subject to the special provisions set out on this page.
- To qualify for the UCL student rate, you must be registered at UCL on a full- or part-time degree programme for the entire duration of your language course. Where possible, please apply using your UCL email address.
- To qualify for the University of London rate, you must be a staff member, student or alumnus of one of the University of London member institutions. Where possible, please apply using your institutional email address (.ac.uk).
- When paying for multiple terms, the terms must be taken consecutively.
- The multi-term discount cannot be applied retroactively.
- Concessionary rates cannot be applied retroactively.
- If taking British Sign Language, the minimum enrolment is two terms/20 weeks.
- We cannot pro-rate fees for part-terms or individual classes.
- Fees apply per academic year and cannot be paid in advance for future years.
- Textbooks and other incidental costs are not included in the course fee (not all courses require a textbook).
- We cannot offer refunds for classes that take place on the advertised day and time but which you do not attend, or are unable to attend because of unforeseen changes in your circumstances.
- The UCL CLIE cannot accept responsibility for unforeseen changes in a participant's circumstances that may prevent attendance.
Terms & Conditions: Classes
- Once enrolled, you cannot defer your enrolment to a subsequent course.
- You may not record, screen capture, stream, copy or duplicate classes or any part thereof.
- You must be at least 18 years old to study with us.
- To qualify for a certificate of attendance, you must attend at least 70% (seven out of the ten per term) of classes. Certificates are available on request at the end of term.
- While studying with us, you are considered a short course student, which includes many benefits. However, our courses do not confer legal 'student status' (such as for tax or bank account purposes), and we cannot sponsor you for any kind of student visa or permit.
- As per the UCL Timetabling Policy, UCL operates a ‘short hour’ system, where classes begin on the hour and end at ten minutes to the hour to allow students and teachers to move between classes.
- The UCL CLIE reserves the right to cancel a course, or replace a tutor if unavoidable. If a course is cancelled by UCL CLIE the cancellation process on this page will apply.
- If you are unhappy with a course, or with our handling of your refund, please follow the process set out at in the UCL Life Learning Framework, in particular section 2.12.
Refund Policy (withdrawal)
UCL students: Due to the substantial discount for UCL students, we are unable to refund student fees paid for one or two terms.
Students who have paid for three terms may cancel their place, provided that the start of term is more than two weeks (14 days) away – see deadlines below. A One Term fee will apply plus an admin fee of £50.
All other applicants: You may cancel your place, provided that the start of term is more than two weeks (14 days) away - see deadlines below. An admin fee of £50 will apply.
The amount refunded will depend on whether you paid for one, two or three terms, your fee category, and at which stage of the year you are withdrawing.
Withdrawal deadlines
Term 1: Withdrawal requests must be received by 23rd September 2024
Term 2: Withdrawal requests must be received by 6th January 2025
Term 3: Withdrawal requests must be received by 21st April 2025
All applicants: If the term starts within two weeks of your cancellation request, you would not be entitled to a refund.
Refund Policy (course cancellation)
All applicants: Very occasionally, we may have to cancel a course. If this happens, you will be offered the opportunity either to join a different course (availability permitting), or to receive a full refund.
The amount refunded will depend on whether you paid for one, two or three terms, your fee category, and at which stage of the year the course is cancelled. Course cancellations are not subject to the admin fee.
