My choice to do the international law specialism was motivated by two reasons. First, I was always fascinated by how international law is used by different countries to ‘communicate’ and develop relations with one another. I wanted to explore these ideas further following my undergraduate studies and a specialised LLM seemed like the best way to do that. Second, the cross-cultural aspect of international law always appealed to me.
As part of my LLM studies, I went on a trip with my class to The Hague where we visited several international courts. Employees working in each institution talked to us about their work and the prospects of pursuing a career as an international civil servant. We were especially lucky to have observed a hearing at the International Court of Justice – allowing us to experience how the theoretical legal concepts we learned as part of our course are applied in practice.
After leaving UCL Laws, I obtained a doctorate in international law. My advice to current students would be: take your studies slowly and pace yourselves - it's a marathon, not a race!
