Sharanya Vaidyanathan – LLM 2015

How would you describe your learning experience at UCL?

I pursued my LLM with UCL Laws from 2014-15, and was greatly advantaged by the best in-class education that UCL provides its students. It is indeed a great privilege to be a part of one of the most ancient and coveted educational institutions, which has educated numerous luminaries. I look back at the year I spent at UCL with nothing but fond memories and always wished that the Master's programme was longer, since the year goes by so swiftly!

Why did you choose to study the general LLM programme?

I chose not to specialise in a particular legal field, and applied for the general LLM programme. This allowed flexibility to choose modules from a wide range of subjects, giving me the opportunity to also interact with tutors and lecturers who excel in their chosen area of research.

What advice would you give to current students at UCL?

UCL has given me a treasure trove of unforgettable memories and experiences that I will cherish for the rest of my life. The advice I’d give to current LLM students would be to make the best of every moment at UCL and during your stay in the incredibly vibrant city of London.

There are plenty of opportunities when it comes to volunteering and part time jobs, if you have some spare time in between classes. London is a breathtaking city - I'd advise students to take some time to travel around the country and see plays and theatres shows, as these experiences are priceless!

What kind of resources or opportunities would you encourage students to try out?

The library resources that are offered to UCL students are definitely something that you should try to take advantage of. There are various student support organisations that not only help you connect with volunteering activities but also provide career advice and conduct workshops that you can be part of. There are a number of societies that help you nurture your hobbies or enable you to find one. These social interactions are vital in helping one to develop, and provide networking and social opportunities which might open doors for future relationships and growth.

Did you take part in any extra-curricular activities during your time at UCL?

I had an opportunity to volunteer for The Times Final Year Student Survey, where I interviewed final year students and conducted surveys. This not only helped me sharpen my communication skills but also gave me an insight into the different views that peers and students in the same year can have about their time at university.

What would you say to someone who is thinking of studying at UCL?

If you're thinking of studying at UCL Laws, I'd say: your study at UCL will undoubtedly be an enriching experience that will prepare you for the real world. Pursuing a Master's degree at UCL will be an absolute privilege -- I can say, without any hesitation, that my year at UCL is and will be by far the best year of my life!

What have you gone on to do since graduating?

After graduating, I pursued a career in litigation, and I am currently a practising Advocate in India - specialising in corporate laws, maritime dispute resolution and arbitration.
