Crane removed from Bentham House as next stage of redevelopment begins

The 16 tonne crane that has been a familiar sight on the Bentham House Redevelopment site for the past 12 months has been removed, signalling the start of a new phase of the project
Standing at a full height of roughly 110m, and taking two weeks to remove, the crane has been sat in 24 cubic metres of steel reinforced concrete.
The crane has been anchored inside the Denys Holland Lecture Theatre in the basement of Bentham House, going up through the Main Lecture Theatre, Gideon Schreier Lecture Theatre, Hong Kong Room and the roof.
The Denys Holland Lecture Theatre will now undergo a full refurbishment, with the room layout being rotated and made larger, increasing the room capacity for learning and events. Along with other teaching spaces, the Denys Holland Lecture Theatre will also have new, and additional, audio visual (AV) capability.
The removal of the crane now allows the roof and internal floors to be completed, marking the beginning of the process to make the building watertight, a major building project milestone, and for work to begin on fitting the new teaching spaces.
Transforming UCL
The redevelopment of Bentham House has been delivered by UCL Estates as part of Transforming UCL, the largest capital programme in the university’s history.
Transforming UCL will see substantial investment of over £1.2 billion over a 10-year period to refurbish and develop some of UCL’s most iconic buildings whilst also bringing forward new world class buildings. Together these will enable and support the University’s continued growth.
