Jack Beadsworth, doctoral candidate at UCL Laws, receives MLR scholarship

4 July 2024

The Modern Law Review Scholarship will support Jack's research on migrant labour.

Jack Beadsworth

Jack Beadsworth, doctoral candidate at UCL Laws, has been awarded a prestigious Modern Law Review Scholarship, for his research on migrant labour. Jack has been pursuing his PhD since 2021, under the supervision of Professor Virginia Mantouvalou (principal supervisor) and Professor Nicola Countouris (subsidiary supervisor), having been awarded a UCL Faculty of Laws scholarship.

The Modern Law Review Scholarship provides recognition and invaluable support for the final year of researching and writing his thesis. Jack's research explores the effect the relationship between labour law and immigration law has on the vulnerability of migrant workers to exploitation in the UK. His thesis argues that labour law and immigration law are integrated into a unique regulatory framework of 'migrant labour law' which intensifies power inequalities and excludes migrant workers from key mechanisms of labour power, producing structural vulnerabilities to exploitation.

Jack said: "I am honoured to be awarded this prestigious scholarship and have my work recognised by such an eminent institution. I am very grateful to the Modern Law Review for the support provided and I hope my thesis does justice to its decision."

Professor Jane Holder, Director of Research Studies at UCL Laws, said: "We are delighted that Jack has been awarded the MLR Scholarship in recognition of the important and impactful nature of his research.  This is excellent news. Well done Jack!"
