Professor Colm O'Cinneide has been selected as one of the three candidates nominated for election as a judge of the European Court of Human Rights in respect of Ireland.
Professor Colm O'Cinneide, Professor of Constitutional and Human Rights Law at UCL Laws, has been selected as one of the three candidates nominated for election as a judge of the European Court of Human Rights in respect of Ireland.
In line with the requirements of Article 21 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), all candidates nominated for the Court must 'be of high moral character and possess the qualifications required for appointment to high judicial office or be jurisconsults of recognised competence'. Candidates are nominated following an open and competitive national selection procedure. The final shortlist of three is then submitted to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, made up of representatives of national parliaments, who will elect one candidate to serve as a judge for a single nine-year term.
It is a great honour to be nominated for election to the Court, and a testimony to Professor O'Cinneide's established expertise in the area of human rights law.
The list of Irish nominated candidates can be found on the Parliamentary Assembly website.
