Son of William Cross, Glasgow West India merchant and proprietor (himself the son of John Cross, also a West India merchant and proprietor) and Anna Buchanan, heiress of Moss and Auchintoshan. Owner of Montreuil Estate in Grenada. Auchintoshan House in Old Kilpatrick Dumbartonshire was sold for £20,000 by John Cross Buchanan's trustees after his death. Held shares in John Cross & Co., West India merchants.
