Henry Esdaile

1799 - 1854

Claimant or beneficiary

Biography

Appears as a counterclaimant with his brother Edward Jeffries Esdaile (q.v.) as 'undermortgagees' for £150,000 for the Carrickfolye estate in Trelawny (for which the compensation was paid into the colonial court) and the Belvidere estate in Hanover (in the latter case, the compensation was paid into a Chancery suit of Esdaile v Hibbert). Edward Jeffries Esdaile and Henry Esdaile were the sons of William Esdaile and grandson of Sir James Esdaile. Barely credibly, in 1831 the two men bought, apparently at face value, over £151,000 owed by the Reid family to Sir James Esdaile & Co., and took what security they could, subsequently launching a Chancery suit to contest the compensation.

  1. Henry Esdaile son of William Esdaile and Elizabeth daughter of Edward Jeffries was born 20/08/1799 and registered 'Parish of St Thomas, County of Surrey' 074/04/1800.

  2. In 1841 Henry Esdiale [sic] Ind. aged 40 was living at Mount Street London with E.Jefferson [sic] Esdiale, Eliza Esdaile and Emily Esdaile aged 30. The death of a Henry Esdaile, presumably this man, was registered Q1 1854 at Marylebone London. He was the brother of Edward Jeffries Esdaile (they were some 15 years apart). On the counterclaim for Hanover no. 14 the two were given as 'Edward Jefferies Esdaile and Henry Esdaile of Cothelstone House in the County of Somerset Esqs.'

  3. Will of Henry Esdaile of No. 20 Berners Street and Cothelstone House proved 07/02/1854. He left his real estate and personalty in trust (his trustees included his nephew Edward Jeffries Esdaile the younger of Cheltenham), after monetary legacies to family members (generally of £200-500 each, but including £5000 to his nephew William Clement Drake Esdaile). He left an annuity of £50 p.a. to Monsieur Francis Chauvet 'now residing at 14 Grafton Street'. His trustees were to sat apart £5000 for the benefit in her life of his niece Emily Frances Weston wife of Plowden Charles Jennette Weston, and £8000 for his niece Eliza Drake Mallet and William Wyndham Mallet. His nephew Edward Jeffries Esdaile jun. was his residuary legatee.
