George Hanbury Mitchell

23rd Feb 1762 - 1816

Biography

London West India merchant, who carried on the business of William Innes of Lime Street Square (q.v.) for whom he was an executor, and was ordered in 1809 to account for the profits he had made from using William Innes' capital in his business; between 1800 and 1802, George Hanbury Mitchell was in partnership with James Cockburn (who was deceased by 1809), and then with Hugh Lindsay and Thomas Fleming.

  1. 'Of Titchfield Lodge', appointed one of three Sheriffs of County of Southampton 1806 (served 1808); Deputy Lieutenant 1807.

  2. Will of George Hanbury Mitchell of Titchfield Hampshire proved 1/10/1816. He was buried 'abode Bagshot' at St Alphege Greenidge 26/09/1816, aged 54. The will opens with an extensive set of instructions about a monument to be erected for him in the parish church at Litchfield. If his estate Camp Savanna could not shortly pay down his debts at death, he authorised the sale of Westhill, his house at Titchfield, the proceeds to provide better security for the annuity of £2000 p.a. he left to his wife Ann, which was primarily secured on Camp Savanna and the enslaved people on it. He left annuities of £20-25 p.a to his Ballantine cousins, and £150 p.a. to the Rev. William Palmer of Herstmonceux, as well as monetary legacies totalling £4500 to the latter and his family. He also left philanthropic bequests, including £500 to the poor of Litchfield.

  3. George Hanbury Mitchell, son of Charles and Ann Mitchell, born 23/02/1762 and baptised 16/03/1762 in Kingston, Jamaica.
