Biography

Son of Cossley Hall (d. 1790) of the Hyde Hall and Florence Hall plantations in Trelawny and his second wife Elizabeth Bromley Hall nee Rose. The family appear to have sold its plantations and enslaved people before compensation, possibly before 1811.

  1. Adm. pens. at TRINITY, Apr. 4, 1807. [Youngest s. of Crossley [sic], of Hyde Hall, Jamaica, W. Indies. B. there 1788. Educated at Harrow.] Matric. Michs. 1807; B.A. 1811; M.A. 1815. Called to the Bar, Middle Temple, Feb. 10, 1815. Judge-Advocate and Advocate-General of Jamaica, 1819. Joined the Northern Circuit, 1824. Commissioner of Bankruptcy in Liverpool; Stipendiary Magistrate there, 1836-9. Chief Magistrate at Bow Street, London, 1839-64. Declined a knighthood and a baronetage. Died Mar. 20, 1876, at 20, Leamington Road Villas, Paddington, London, W. (Boase, I. 1291; Law Lists; not in Harrow Sch. Reg.).

  2. Left £140,000 at death, when he was shown as formerly of 21 Queensborough Terrace, Hyde Park but late of 20 Leamington Road Villas, Westminster Park.
