Biography

Older brother of James Ewing of Strathleven (major West India merchant and slave trader; a founder of pro-slavery lobby group Glasgow West India Association; president (1816-1819) of University of Strathclyde forerunner Anderson’s Institution).

We believe the man known as Humphrey Ewing, who appears as co-owner or partner with John Jacques and James Laing of Jamaica for a number of estates in Jamaica between c. 1800 and c. 1815, to be the same man as Humphrey Ewing Maclae (q.v.).
