James Dennistoun of Dennistoun

Partner in the Glasgow West India firm of Dennistoun Buchanan and William Duff & Co. of New Providence with among other James Buchanan (q.v.). Nine enslaved people in the Bahamas were registered for William Duff & Co. in the names of the 12 partners in 1822. His son James Dennistoun of Dennistoun (1803-1855) has an entry in the ODNB as 'antiquary and art collector': items from his collection include the Ghislieri book of hours in the British Library (Yates Thompson MS 29).

NB this is a different man from James Dennistoun of Golfhill (1758-1835), a partner in Buchanan, Steven and Co.

Bahamas Slave Register 1822 Vol. 1 no. 1. London Gazette 19279 15/05/1835 p. 954 identifies the late partner in Dennistoun Buchanan as James Dennistoun of Dennistoun; Burke's Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Landed Gentry (4th ed. 1862) Vol. I 'Dennistoun of Dennistoun' pp. 361-362 shows James Dennistoun of Colgrain (the father of James Dennistoun of Dennistoun) dying in 1816 and James Dennistoun of Colgrain (the grandfather) dying in 1796.
