Eldest son of John Macfarlane of Macfarlane and his second wife Helen, daughter of Robert, second Viscount Arbuthnot. Antiquary. Inherited the Jamaican property of his brother Alexander Macfarlane in 1755, along with another brother, William Macfarlane (both q.v.). Sold the property to John Wallace in 1762.
Married Lady Elizabeth Erskine, daughter of Alexander, sixth Earl of Kellie. Died, without issue, at Canongate, Edinburgh, 05/06/1767. Biried at Greyfriars kirk, Edinburgh. "After his death his valuable collections were purchased by the Faculty of Advocates, Edinburgh." (Macfarlane, p. 132). Succeeded by his brother William.
