Jeremiah Hodges

Son of Anthony Hodges I, brother of Anthony Hodges II and brother-in-law [as well as uncle by marriage] of Godschall Johnson I (all of whom q.v.). On the death of his nephew Anthony Hodges III, Jeremiah Hodges succeeded to estates both in Oxfordshire and on St Kitts, apparently under the trust deed in his father's will. He sold an estate [unnamed but probably the estate known as Clay Hill by the 1830s] on St Kitts to Benjamin Amory jun. (q.v.) for £14,000 in 1803, apparently to repay mortgage debt on his Oxfordshire estates.

1. Will of Jeremiah Hodges of Bolney Oxfordshire proved 18/06/1804. After monetary legacies of several hundred pounds to his wife and children, and the bequest of £100 Tontine shares to each of the latter, he left his wife an annuity of £200 p.a and his son Frederick Richard an annuity of £300 p.a rising to £500 p.a. on the death of his [Jeremiah Hodges'] wife. He divided his residuary estate among three daughters [implying that his eldest son William was provided for under the will by which Bolney and the St Kitts estates came to Jeremiah Hodges].
