Robert Robertson of Auchleeks

7th Feb 1777 - 23rd Mar 1859

Biography

Robert Robertson was involved in the hire of enslaved people to the British Army in Jamaica with his partner Edward Hamlin Adams, connected by their involvement with the Earl of Balcarres, with James Hozier and with the family of George Atkinson (q.v.). Listed as the absentee trustee of Hungerford Spooner for Charlottenburg estate 1817-1823.

  1. Given that Robert Robertson of Auchleeks married in 1816 the daughter of George Atkinson of Temple Sowerby, it has been inferred by LBS that Robert Robertson of Auchleeks was the same man as the contractor of enslaved people in Jamaica, and the legacy strands associated with this entry are for Robert Robertson of Auchleeks. Robert Robertson of Auchleeks reportedly bought the Auchleeks estate in Scotland from his cousin Duncan Robertson, and purchased the Membland estate in Devon in 1827, acting as High Sheriff of Devon in 1837.

  2. Died at 26 Royal Crescent, Bath, 23 March 1859.

  3. Will of Robert Robertson late of Memblands [now of] Royal Crescent Bath and of Auchleeks, who died 23/03/1859 at Bath, was proved 27/06/1859, effects under £12,000.
