Charles Sloane Cadogan 1st Earl Cadogan

Biography

Co-heir of his grandfather Hans Sloane, and MP for Cambridge 1749-1754 and 1755-1776.

  1. Only son of Charles Cadogan, 2nd Baron Cadogan. Married (1) 30 May 1747, Frances (died 25 May 1768), daughter of Henry Bromley, 1st Baron Montfort, 6 sons; (2) 10 May 1777, Mary (divorced 1796), daughter of Charles Churchill, 3 sons, 3 daughters. Succeeded his father as 3rd Baron 24 September 1776; inherited Stanley’s half of the Sloane estate, Chelsea 1780 under will of Hans Stanley; created Earl Cadogan 27 December 1800.

  2. In a mortgage document dated 31/03/1774, Charles Sloane Cadogan entered into an agreement with Sir Robert Cockburn, Sir George Colebrooke [q.v.], John Stewart and John Nelson for the loan by Cadogan of £20,500 to enable the four men to purchase from Andrew Davoran [sic] a 320-acre estate [as yet unidentified] in St George's parish Grenada, together with the enslaved people on the estate.
