1797 - 1871
Surinam slave-owner resident in Britain, awarded the compensation for Plantage Hamptoncourt for 94 enslaved people (of 95 registered), when he was shown as of Whitehays [sic], Christchurch Hampshire. Son-in-law of the Jamaica slave-owner Alexander Campbell (q.v.) and possibly the same man as the awardee of slave compensation in British Honduras in the 1830s.
In 1861 George Nicholson 'Landed proprietor and fundholder' born Kirkoswald Cumberland aged 64 was living at Whitehayes Christchurch with wife Jannette Reid Nicholson aged 48 born London. In 1871 George Nicholson aged 74 'Landowner with income from dividends' born Kirk[os]wald Cumberland was living at Whitehayes Burton, Christchurch, Hampshire with his wife Jannette Reed aged 55 born London, and two servants.
The will of George Nicholson late of Whitehayes in the parish of Southampton who died 11/11/1871 at Maison du Bois Faubourg St Denis, Paris proved 28/11/1871, effects £60,000. One of the executors was his nephew Joseph Nicholson of Renwick in Cumberland, and another Edward Desborough Man, colonial broker of 7 Mincing Lane.
George Nicholson and Jannette Reid Campbell, daughter of Alexander Campbell, had married at St George's Bloomsbury, when he was described as 'merchant' of Tavistock Hotel Covent Garden son of John Nicholson gentleman and she as spinster of 46 Woburn Place, daughter of Alexander Campbell merchant.
