John Reid of Wakefield estate and Cheltenham

1756 - 1813

Biography

Slave-owner of Jamaica, dying at Cheltenham in 1813, and according to online genealogical work son of John Reid senior (q.v.) and Mary Haughton, and brother of George Reid senior (q.v.)

  1. Will of John Reid of [Wakefield estate in the parish of] Trelawny, Cornwall [made in 1807 and attested in Jamaica in 1814] was proved in London 18/04/1815. Under the will, made in 1807, he left his wife Mary Haughton Reid [nee James] all his personal estate except his 'slaves, cattle, stock..belonging to Wakefield estate': these and the estate he left to his wife for life, except if she married, when they would be placed in trust so that she had the income from them. After her death, he left all his property except his house in Portland Place to Richard Quarrell, the son of the late William Dawes Quarrell of Phoenix in Hanover, chargeable with the sum of £5000 to his [Richard Quarrell's] sister Elizabeth Reid Quarrell, to whom he also left his house in Portland Place and whom he described as his and his wife's adopted daughter. He required that she should not marry without his wife's approbation: if she violated this, she forfeited both the house and the legacy, which were to go Mary Haughton Reid.
