Biography

Co-heir of her maternal uncle James Gibbon (q.v.) and sister-in-law of William Praed (q.v.). Her will was proved in 1797 although she was still recorded as co-owner of estates and enslaved people in Jamaica as late as 1803.

  1. Will of Sarah Backwell spinster of Tyringham Buckinghamshire proved 07/09/1797. She left numerous monetary legacies of £50-£200 each to family and friends with her residuary estate to the sister Elizabeth, failing whom to her husband William Mackworth Praed. That estate included her share of extensive property in Britain and Jamaica that she said had come to her, and the other half to her sister, from James Gibbon.
