Robert Lindsay

Slave-owner in Jamaica, son-in-law of Ambrose Carter (q.v.) and father of William James Lindsay (q.v.).

1. Robert Lindsay had seven children with his wife Ann nee Carter: Eliza (born c. 1802 in Jamaica); William James (1804 Jamaica), Annie (1808 Jamaica); Mary (1810 Bromley-by-Bow, Middlesex); Susannah (1813, baptised at 'Mrs Niven's Morant Bay', Jamaica); Robert (1815 Hackney, Middlesex); Isabella (1820 Hackney). Susannah (Susan) was a patient at Northumberland House private asylum in 1841 at the same time as her uncle Charles Carter (q.v.) and was the primary beneficiary of a trust fund established by her grandmother (and Robert Lindsay's mother-in-law) Leonora Sophia Carter. The trust fund had presumably been exhausted by the time Susan died in Hanwell Pauper Asylum, Middlesex, in 1845, possibly aged 28 (cemetery record) or c. aged 40 (asylum record).

2. Robert Lindsay of 3 Chatham Place, 'near the gravel pitts', Hackney, gentleman, purchased insurance for his brick dwelling house at 3 Chatham Place for £1000 and his ‘household goods wearing apparel printed books & plate’ for a further £1000 on 2 January 1815 until 'Christmas 1815'.

3. Robert Lindsay of Loads [sic - Lodes?] House was buried in Kingston St Mary, Somerset, 17/09/1826 age 67. His wife Mrs Ann Lindsay, also of Loads House, was buried in Kingston St Mary 20/02/1828 age 50.

4. There is a strong possibility Robert Lindsay was a Unitarian. His children's baptisms were registered at Dr Williams' Library, which has close links with the Unitarians. His brother James Lindsay, DD, ran a school and preached at Newington Green. James Lindsay lived in Bow, as did his brother Robert, who later moved to Hackney, which in itself was a popular location for Unitarians. Robert was one of the trustees and executors of the will of James. James Lindsay was baptised 19/12/1753, son of William Lindsay, at Pitcarrity, near Kirriemuir, Forfarshire (now Angus). There is a likely baptism for Robert Lindsay 14/02/1760, son of William Lindsay, also at Pitcarrity.
