William Tharp of St James

???? - 1765

Biography

'William Tharpe' was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 100 acres of land in St James.

William Tharp of St James, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1765. Slave-ownership at probate: 163 of whom 82 were listed as male and 81 as female. 0 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £9667.46 Jamaican currency of which £8039.38 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £0 currency debts and £0 currency plate.

This William Tharp has not been definitively identified but is probably the son of William Tharp of Hanover (q.v.) and Ann Haughton. His association with the Plumb and Reading estate in St James is derived from the presence in 1800 as owner of the estate of William Haughton Tharp, known to be the son of William Tharp and his wife Sarah Ann: LBS has inferred that William Tharp the father was the same man as William Tharp of St James.
