1820 - 2nd Sep 1882
Son of Charles Bernard of Frampton Lodge (q.v.) and Margaret (nee Baker) with an entry in the ODNB as 'jurist and international lawyer.' The entry says of him that he was 'descended from a Huguenot family which left France after the revocation of the edict of Nantes and who for several generations owned land [sic] at Montego Bay in Jamaica.' Under the will of his father, Mountague Bernard as a younger son was left a legacy of £1000 or £1500 (depending on the survival of his older brothers) from the profits of his father's moiety of the Eden estate [and the people attached to it] in addition to the unspecified provision under his parents' marriage settlement.
