Robert Shawe

London solicitor, who had been in Jamaica in the 1790s, and retained interests there including enslaved people. Partner with his brother Richard Shawe (q.v.) and father of George Augustus Shawe (q.v.), and party to Chancery suits into which compensation was later paid for two claims in St Mary.

1. Will of Robert Shawe of New Bridge Street [made in 1818] proved 13/03/1819. In the will he left to Susanna Clarke of Kingston widow of George Clarke all his 'negroes and other slaves' in Jamaica and an annuity of £300 currency p.a. He left his wife Eliza Louise £2000 and the right to live in his house at New Bridge Street for six months (she paying rent to his partners). He left £6000 to his son Richard, a Lieutenant in the 1st Native Cavalry of the East India Co.'s Madras Establishment, being what he had settled on his other son George Augustus Shawe. He left £8000 each to any children he had with Eliza Louise, who he said had in 1817 agreed to buy Burwood Lodge at Hersham [near Walton on Thames] Surrey for £3330, and he willed the improvements since made from his personal estate to her.

2. The administration of his estate by Eliza Louise Shawe and William Witham, the executors, was contested by Richard Shawe and George Augustus Shawe in Shawe v Shawe.

This seems to be a separate man from the Robert Shaw or Shawe of Shaw's View in St Dorothy, who appears to have been still alive in 1820.
