Daniel Stoddart

???? - 1843

Biography

Army agent in London, nephew and heir of Alexander McRae (q.v.) under the latter's will proved in early 1837. Daniel Stoddart's own will [made in 1841] was proved at the beginning of 1844 and left his Jamaica property - the Alexandria and Mount Regale estates, and a house on Milk Street in Kingston - together with his personalty in trust (subject in the case of the Kingston house to the life interest of Elizabeth McFarlane [who had been his uncle's housekeeper]) primarily for his nieces and nephews, the children of his sister Katherine wife of Donald MacDonald late of Inverness. The will identified his partner in as Charles Roderick McGrigor, later Sir Charles Roderick McGregor, who left £191,772 19s 11d when he died in 1890.

Sources

The probate of the will of Alexander McRae (PROB 11/1871/294) makes clear that the nephew and heir given as 'Donald Stoddart' in the will itself was in fact Daniel Stoddart of Charles Street St James Square, whose will was proved 01/01/1844, PROB 11/1992/73 [the will is indexed by TNA online as 'Daniel Steddart'].
