John King of Greenwich

John King then of Tower Street City of London and his daughter Phebe [sic] were parties to an indenture of 01/08/1774 which shows that John King had purchased from Patrick Connor for £1000 an annuity of £120 p.a. for the life of John King and then of £70 p.a. for the life of Phoebe King secured on (1) Connor's property including enslaved people on St Vincent and (2) the bond of Richard Willis of London. The annuity amounts were later in the deed reported as £150 p.a. and £100 p.a. respectively with the proviso that if paid promptly the amounts would be £30 per quarter and £22 10s [sic] per quarter. The indenture includes a list of 46 enslaved people, part of the security.

1. Will of John King of Greenwich proved 27/01/1777. The will identifies his daughter as Phoebe and describes the annuity amounts as £120 p.a. and £70 p.a. He provided that if his estate was sufficient to buy an annuity for his son John of £40 p.a., his residuary estate should go to his daughter Phoebe.

2. Phoebe King was possibly the Phoebe King who married Richard Powis at St Bride's 30/09/1778 and was buried 02/11/1789 at St Alfege Greenwich, 'brewer's wife.' LBS has not fully analysed the Powis family of Greenwich and its brewing interests, but the will of William Powis brewer of Woolwich Kent made 18/05/1799 (proved 07/02/1806) shows his partners as his brothers Thomas and Richard; a Chancery suit of Powis v Powis in 1804 concerned the estate of the deceased Richard Powis late partner with Thomas Powis and William Powis of East Greenwich brewers; while the partnership of Richard Powis the elder, William Powis and Richard Powis the younger was dissolved 19/09/1807 with the retirement of Richard Powis jun., and the continuation of the business by Richard Powis senior and William Powis. There were thus 3 generations of Richard Powis (and at least two of William Powis) in the brewing company.
