Biography

London merchant, partner with his son Colin Currie (q.v.). until 1760. The successor firm of Currie and Shakespear was a West India merchant: the focus of David Shakespear's own business has not yet been fully established, but he operated at least in part as London correspondent for Jamaican slave-owning members of his wife's family, the Campbells of Black River, and their networks.

  1. Will of David Currie of Chiswick, made in 1766, proved 26/01/1771. He left his wife Anne his house at Chiswick for life and an annuity of £200 p.a., and his daughter Elizabeth wife of John Shakespear £2000. His residuary heir was his son Colin.
