Captain William Ricketts

1. Son of Thomas Ricards, a Colonel in the army of Charles I, who was killed at the Seige of Lichfield in 1646, and his wife Elizabeth Rudely. "William Ricards, esq. a captain in Cromwell's army, who, accompanying the expedition under Penn and Venables, was present at the conquest of Jamaica, in 1665, and subsequently obtained the command of Bluefield's fort in that island. His commission, having been made out in the name of Ricketts, he and his descendants have ever since retained that designation. He m. about the years 1672, Mary, daughter of -- Goodwin, esq. a younger son of Sir Francis Goodwin, and the Lady Elizabeth Gray, only daughter of Arthur, fourteenth Lord Grey de Wilton, by his lordship's first wife, Dorothy Zouch..." Six sons and two daughers: John, who died s.p.; William of Ridgeland (q.v.); Jacob, d.s.p.; George of Canaan (q.v.); Benjamin (d.s.p.); Oswald (not mentioned in his will, a captain in the Royal Navy "lost on the rocks of Bermudas"; Violetta (died unmarried); Rachel (married Thomas Johnson and had issue).
