1757 - 24th Dec 1840
Andrew Sutherland was the son of Colonel John Sutherland. His uncle was Colonel George Sutherland of Rearchar/Rearquhar 1720-1815.
Andrew Sutherland was the brother of Wilhelmina Sutherland, b. 1768 who married William Taylor, b. 1766, d. 21 Mar 1829, Postmaster and Sheriff Clerk of Dornoch [1809-1829]
Andrew Sutherland had a daughter named Roberta Sutherland who was born in Inverness c1783 to an unknown mother. She married Andrew Ross in Dornoch in 1823 and died in 1855. Andrew Ross married his second wife, Johanna Taylor McEwen who was born in 1831, in 1856. She was a daughter of Andrew Sutherland's sister.
O’Sullivan Sutherland wrote from Jamaica on 6 March 1783, saying “Andrew is well but poor fellow, still a book keeper”
Andrew Sutherland was the overseer of Orange Vale estate in St George’s, Jamaica from 1796-98. The estate was owned by John Elmslie [1741-1824]. Andrew visited Dornoch from October 22 1822 until April 20th 1823 when he went to London on his way back to Jamaica. In his diary Robert Sutherland Taylor described Andrew as” only surviving brother of Mrs Taylor arrived in Dornoch from Jamaica where he had been for 43 years”. The entry was written at a later time and it is evident from other information, that the number of years given are an error.
Andrew Sutherland Esq died 24 December 1840 aged 83 years and was buried in the Scotch Burial Ground, Kingston. A monument was placed over his remains by his sons and daughters.
His will left all his property to his 'reputed children of colour and their mother'. They are named as: 'Andrew Sutherland (who was christened on 28 Jun 1812), Margaret Sutherland, George Sutherland, Robert Sutherland, William Sutherland and Jennett S. Johnston, the wife of Henry Johnston deceased and old Margaret Sutherland their mother, a black woman, my old housekeeper'
