London banker, partner in Dorrien, Magens, Mello (q.v.) from c.1805, awarded compensation for the enslaved people on Invera and Argyle esates on Tobago as mortgagees. The firm was a predecessor of the Royal Bank of Scotland.
John Mello of Clapham married Elizabeth Hepworth (a minor) at St Michael's Cornhill 28/02/1798; their son William Mello and daughter Isabella were baptised 15/02/1799 and 31/01/1800 respectively at St Mary Newington; John Arnold Mello was baptised at St Olave Hart St. 19/05/1801; Lewis-Charles 15/61802 at St Olave; Magens Mello 14/01/1805 at St Olave.
In 1841 John Mello 'aged 60' Banker was living with his wife Eliz., aged 50, in Baker Street. More consistent with his marriage in 1798 would be the baptism date of 29/05/1772 for John Mello son of Arnold and Ann Mello at the German or Hamburg Lutheran Chapel City of London.
