Celebrating World Book Day 2024
7 March 2024
Library, Culture, Collections and Open Science (LCCOS) are seeking book recommendations to enrich UCL’s library collections.
Books help us to articulate and understand our world. They offer readers new insight into the views and outlooks of their authors. While library collections represent multiple viewpoints, they can still reflect the institutional priorities and periods in which they were created. Librarians at UCL work closely with academics and students to ensure our book collections serve the needs of the different communities we support.
Since 2021, we have been asking our communities at UCL and beyond for book recommendations to celebrate important awareness dates. We have been buying any books that we don’t already hold. This activity has been running alongside other projects led by the Library Liberating the Collections Group to increase visibility of, and access to, works by authors who have previously been marginalised, and whose voices have been less heard, because of factors such as race, sexuality, gender and disability.
Rozz Evans, Head of Collection Strategy and co-chair of the group said:
“The response to our calls for recommended books has been fantastic and this is now a regular activity which we will continue to support, as part of a wide range of projects to enhance the inclusivity of the material in our collections. We are also taking steps to raise the profile of historical material we hold that challenges the traditional views, experiences and opinions which have been over-represented.”
