MAN/1 - Mann's writings and notes re Albanian language and literature (1930-1979)

Mann first visited Albania in 1929 where he taught English at a American Red Cross funded boys' high school in Tirana. From 1947-1972 he was reader in Czech and Albanian languages at SSEES. He wrote a number of works on Albanian language and literature.

MAN/2 - Mann's writings and notes re Czech and Slovak languages and literatures (1934-1979) (circa)

Previous number: items 9, 10, 11, 12 and parts of 13, 15 and 23

Mann was lector at the Masaryk University of Brno, Czechoslovakia in the 1930s and was reader in Czech and Albanian languages and literature at SSEES 1947-1972. He wrote a number of works on Czech language and literature.

Contents: Mann's writings, notes, card indexes, annotated publications and microfilm re his work on Czech and (more rarely) Slovak language and literature

MAN/3 - Mann's writings and notes re the Indo-European language and on language generally (1926-1984) (circa)

Previous number: items 16, 17, 18 and parts of items 13, 14, 15 and 23

Mann had an interest not only in individual languages but in the ancient Indo-European language from which many languages had developed and in linguistic concepts generally.

Contents: Mann's writings and notes re his work on Indo-European language in particular his Indo-European dictionary on which he worked on and off from 1925 onwards and which was finally published in 1984.

MAN/4 - Mann's writings and notes re other languages and literatures (1927-1980)

Previous number: item 8 and parts of items 4, 13, 14, 15, 19 and 23

Although Mann's main focus was on the Albanian and Czech languages he also had an interest in many other languages particularly Armenian and Cypro-Mycenæan.

Contents: Mann's writings, notes and card indexes re his work on languages and literatures other than Albanian and Czech. Contains many examples of "minimum dictionaries" which are attempts by Mann to produce basic vocabularies for a wide range of languages.

Contents: Mann's correspondence particularly concerning the sales of his books and with publishers; also contains a few papers re linguistics.

In addition to his major publications, Mann published a number of articles in his career particularly in the "Slavonic and East European Review".
