Dean's welcome

I wish you a very warm welcome to the Faculty of Life Sciences!

Professor Gail Taylor
In the Faculty of Life Sciences we are trying to answer some of the most enduring questions about life on earth, and also to solve the urgent problems faced by all living things.

Our research spans an incredible breadth of scientific areas, from studies of the behaviour of single molecules, to developing cells, neuronal circuits, and up to entire ecosystems full of living things.

The faculty includes the Division of Biosciences, one of Europe’s leading Schools of Pharmacy, two of the world’s leading neuroscience institutes (the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit and the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour) and the Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology. Our research is supported by platform technologies and facilities ranging from advanced electron microscopy to a research centre on a National Trust nature reserve.

Our students are closely integrated into our community through research-embedded teaching, including our highly rated, and world-leading undergraduate programmes, a UK-leading MPharm degree, as well as a wide range of exciting Master's programmes. We also host some of the UK’s largest and best quality Doctoral Training Programmes, including the inter-institutional BBSRC LiDO, the UCL MRC Doctoral Training Programme and the UCL Wellcome Optical Biology PhD Programme, as well as a range of Clinical Academic Training Programmes. To keep research and teaching closely linked across the faculty, we aim to ensure that all our academic researchers are involved in teaching students.
