UCL MRes Biosciences Scholarship 2024-2025

This scholarship supports UK Black, Asian and ethnic minority students at the start of their academic career in biosciences research on any stream of the UCL MRes Biosciences programme in 2024-25.

The MRes Biosciences programme is designed for students who wish to increase their research experience or evaluate their suitability for research at this level before committing to a PhD. Applicants will have good fundamental knowledge of the area they wish to study. We will consider applicants with a broad range of experiences, from recent graduates to experienced laboratory scientists.

The student will graduate in ONE of the following subjects

Additional eligibility criteria: UK-permanent resident from certain BAME ethnic groups (see below)

Eligibility

In order to APPLY, you must:

  • have already submitted a completed admission application to the MRes Biosciences programme (details of application can be found here). 
  • be a UK-permanent resident from one of the following BAME ethnic groups:
    • Black or Black British - Caribbean
    • Black or Black British - African
    • Other Black background
    • Asian or Asian British - Bangladeshi
    • Asian or Asian British - Pakistani

There is 1 scholarship available and it is to be held for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Value, benefits, and duration

The scholarships consist of tuition fees equivalent to the standard home rate (2024/25) £19,300, plus a maintenance stipend of £10,000 that contributes to the cost of living whilst on the programme. The scholarship will also offer mentoring support.

Selection

A panel from UCL will select the awardee on the basis of:

  • Academic attainment – as demonstrated by prior results, references, CV. 
  • Financial need based on socio-economic background.
  • Your personal statement.
  • You may also be interviewed to further assess your suitability for the programme.

How to apply

  1. You need to complete a full application to the MRes Biosciences programme (details of the requirements and process can be found here).
  2. In your personal statement submitted in the application process for the programme you will need to state clearly that you are applying for the 2024 UCL MRes Biosciences Scholarship Scheme.
  3. You need to submit the financial need application form. Submissions of this form without application to the MRes Biosciences programme will be ineligible for consideration.

Results

The panel will meet in August 2024 (it will take two weeks for UCL admissions to process the application) and applicants will be notified of final decision as soon as possible.
