Speaker: Juan Domingo Gispert, Head of the Neuroimaging department in the BarcelonaBeta Brain Research Center (BBRC)

Title: Neuroimaging alterations in preclinical stages of Alzheimer's Disease

Abstract: Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) has a long preclinical stage in which cognition is still within normal ranges but Amyloid-β plaques and/or tau tangles –the pathological hallmarks of the disease- are already present. A better understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms at play in these preclinical stages is of the utmost importance for the rational design of preventive interventions. To this end, the Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Center (BBRC) has established the ALFA cohort of almost 3000 cognitively unimpaired individuals, aged 45-75, at higher risk of developing AD dementia. In this talk, results from the ALFA study will be presented to illustrate brain alterations associated with preclinical AD stages.

Bio: Juan Domingo Gispert is the Head of the Neuroimaging department in the BarcelonaBeta Brain Research Center (BBRC) and the Head of Neuroimaging of the Alfa Study. He is involved on several national and international projects and initiatives, such as EPAD or AMYPAD, where he leads the IMI2 working group. His main interests include the use of imaging to study the pathophysiological processes of preclinical stages of Alzheimer's Disease and to evaluate the impact of preventive strategies.
