AXIm puts great emphasis on outreach and public engagement and is constantly seeking opportunities to engage with schools and communicate the importance of developing innovations in X-ray imaging to the general public.
The following list is not meant to be exhaustive but rather to provide a series of representative examples of our activities in this area:
- Stand at the “Made at UCL” science Fair, Oct 5 2019
- Detecting the undetectable – transforming the use of x-rays 124 years after their discovery, UCL Minds Public Lectures, Oct 19 2019.
- How to advance x-ray imaging, seeing the unseen (podcast)
- Shining a Light Inside the Body (podcast)
- Next generation X-ray vision: the advent of multi-contrast x-ray imaging techniques, Spring into STEM, 15 Jun 2022.
- Yearly support to the In2Science programme
- Regular participation in Pint of Science (eg Lights, Camera, Action!)
- Engagement with the Orbyts Programme (eg )
- Regular support to “Spring Into Stem” initiatives
- Several AXIm members (e.g. Maughan Jones, Roche I Morgo, Navarrete Leon, Rossi) secured “Impact Fellowships” from UCL’s Institute of Healthcare Engineering, through which they pursued several additional engagement activities (Health Changers, Science Showcase, Science Symposium, podcasts, etc.).
- Dr Charlotte Maughan Jones also secured an ABSW Media Fellowship, which led to a placement with “The Londonist”
- Oriol Roche i Morgo held an “X-ray arts workshop” at Haberdashers Crayford
Examples of Schools we reach out to as part of our Outreach activities include, among others, Boughton Monchelsea Primary School, Maidstone; St Peters Primary School, Folkestone; Highworth Grammar School for Girls, Ashford; Bethersden Guides Group, Ashford; Invicta Grammar School, Maidstone; Lady Joanna Thornhill Primary School, Ashford; The Schools at Somerhill; The Wyvern School (SEND school), Ashford; Bethersden Primary School, Ashford; Martello Primary School, Folkestone; Commonwealth School, Swindon; Outwood Academy Brumby, Scunthorpe. Many of these were covered by Maughan Jones in her “STEM Ambassador” role. An AXIm delegation consisting of Maughan Jones, Roche i Morgo, Cipiccia, Buchanan and Lioliou held an outreach event at the Wyvern School for groups with a variety of learning needs. Roche i Morgo and others also took part in several Career Fairs (St Michael’s Catholic College, Ark Schools..) on top of the Career events we run in the Department.
