Medical student awarded University of London Gold Medal 2023

Medicine graduate, Niraj Doshi, scooped the award for his viva presentation at this year's ceremony, making it the third year running that a UCL Medical School student has won the Gold Medal in the prestigious University of London competition.
Speaking of his recent graduation and winning the University of London Award, Niraj said: "I'm very pleased to have graduated from UCL Medical School with the University of London Gold Medal in Medicine! Endless thanks to faculty and my incredible family and friends. Congratulations to UCL's class of 2023 - the perfect celebration to mark the end of 6 years!" Niraj takes home the 2023 Gold Award and £500 prize money.
The University of London Gold Medal MBBS competition has been running since 1903. Each year, London medical schools are invited to nominate their top performing students in their final examinations to take part.
During the competition, students are questioned by a panel of experts - external to the London universities - covering core specialties such as general medicine, surgery, obstetrics & gynecology, clinical pharmacology, emergency medicine, and psychiatry. The winner is decided by the panel, based on the answers the candidates give to these questions.
The MBBS winner receives a Gold Medal and a cash prize of £500.
The Gold Medal has been won 49 times by candidates from UCL and its constituent medical schools: The Middlesex Hospital Medical School, The Royal Free Hospital Medical School and University College Hospital Medical School. The previous two UCL MBBS Gold Medal winners were Lara Rossi (2022) and Aphra Luchesa Smith (2021), with UCL's Alice Storrie awarded the runner-up Betuel Prize in Medicine.
